The Scriptures

We believe that "all scripture is given by inspiration of God," by which we understand the whole Bible, and in the sense that "the words" of the sacred writings were communicated by the Spirit of God to holy men of old; and that this divine inspiration extends equally and fully to all parts of these writings--historical, poetical, doctrinal, and prophetical--as appeared in the original manuscripts. We believe that all Scriptures center about the Lord Jesus Christ in His person and work and in His first and second coming and hence that no portion even of the Old Testament, is properly read, or understood, until it leads to Him. We also believe that all the Scriptures were designed for our practical instruction.

Mark 12:26, Mark 13:11, Luke 24:27, Luke 24:44, John 5:39, Acts 1:16, Acts 17:2-3, Acts 18:28, Acts 26:22-23, Romans 15:4, I Corinthians 2:13, I Corinthians 10:11, II Timothy 3:16, II Peter 1:21

Layman's Terms

The Bible is God’s book. It is the autobiography of his love for us. Jesus and his love for us is the main point of the story. The story tells about how he crafted a world for us. It tells how he took pity on us when we rebelled. It tells us how he repaired the relationship we broke in our rebellion. It tells us how we can have peace and joy in this life and the next. It tells us of our eventual reunion. It is a love story. It spans all of earth’s history, from beginning to the coming end.

Digression

The Bible is the God given word. The original words given to the people who wrote it down are divine in nature. God has miraculously protected his word, but our translation and application of those words are subject to error.

Jesus is seen throughout scripture. All scripture points to him as the author and finisher of our faith. He was there when the world was created. He died on the cross to save the world. One day he will return and establish his eternal kingdom establishing a new world. The first chapter of John refers to Jesus as the Word of God.  "Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος, καὶ ὁ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος.” In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with* God, and the Word was God.

*Yes I know some of the arguments regarding the usage of τὸν Θεόν representing “the God” versus “a God” resulting in “and the Word was with a God.”  Also the literal for the phrase “and the Word was God” is “and God was the Word.”  This is not the forum for that discussion.

Memory Verse

II Peter 1:19-21

19And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
